The two troups from Ambalapuzha and Alangattu have been conferred upon with a special status and importance. At presen there are three groups among the devotees at Alangatu. In the begening all he devotees started the pilgrimage from the temple atEkamoola but for the past seven or eight yerars they are divided and commence the holy trek to Sabarimala from , tree different temples.
The Alangattu – Kottappuram congregation start their travel with a festival of lghts at the temple of sr Krishnaswamy at Alangatt. Earlier the festival used to to be held at the family temple of Vazhappanali. Before setting out the troops from Manjapra celebrate a light festival at the Akkunnam temple where the Idol is a Stone bleived to have been presented by Sri. Ayyappan. The festival light is still help important at theKuttipuzha Ammanam temple where traditionsl rituals are strictly adhered to.
The Alangattu troops arrives at Erumeli on 26th of the month of Dhanu and o the 27th , they participate in the pettathullal.
The Alangattu trps performs the ritual of pettathullal to the accompaniment of several chenda hands and other orchestra and with caparisoned elephants adding t the magnitude of the celebration. Only instrument befitting Gods are used for music here. The pettathulal starts only after the sight of the customary star in the sky. There attitude is very simple and meager, only a black loin cloth and ritual powders and the sandalwood paste. In this they differ from the Amalappuzha troop.
The Alangatu troops have been accorded some special rights , in the lamp ceremony of 1st Makaram (Makara Vilakku) in the ghee anointing ritual and ‘ Panthirunazhi’ apam and aravana . on the 2nd Makaram they reach Saramkuthy but like the Ambalapuzha troop, do not brings arrows. The Alangattu congregation does not enter the minor temple or Vavar Mosque at Erumeli.
The pettahullal start at 2 p.m when the customary silver star appears in the sky. The petta(the name of the ritual) used to be wound up with their performance but tradition is breached often at present. The chief swami in the begening was the head of the Vazhappanali family perished, a one pachupillai was appointed by congregation. This change lead to controversies and disputes about the right of inheritance.
In course of time the Ambadathu familyacquired this coveted status. It is said that there exists a copper plate proving this inheritance
